Ambala, Sept.28, 2021:- The Urology team at Fortis Hospital Mohali performed a
life-saving surgery on a 61-year-old patient, who was suffering from prostate
cancer, using the revolutionary 4th generation robotic machine
– Da Vinci. A team of doctors led by Dr Manish Ahuja, Consultant, Urology, Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgery,
Fortis Mohali, performed the robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical
prostatectomy.
On presentation, the 61-year-old
patient, Rajesh Kumar
Kuchhal, complained of frequent urination and intense pain in the
pelvic area. A prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test showed the patient’s
serum levels were elevated and the MRI of the pelvis revealed that he had
prostate cancer (Stage 1). Further, the PET-CT scan revealed an ill-defined
PSMA expressing soft tissue nodule involving the peripheral zone of the
prostate along with the right posterolateral aspect suggestive of primary
mitotic pathology.
Dr
Manish Ahuja, Consultant, Urology, Robotic & Laparoscopic Surgery, Fortis
Hospital Mohali, said that the prostrate is the male
reproductive gland which can enlarge due to hormonal changes after the age of
50. At times these enlargements can be cancerous in nature. However, if
detected in time, the gland can be removed, and the growth of the tumor
stemmed. Several complicated and delicate surgeries are done with greater
precision using robot-assisted technology. He added further that it is the
latest form of minimal invasive surgery and provides a 3D view of the operative
field via a special camera inserted into the body of the patient. Parts of the
body which are difficult to reach with the human hand can be accessed through
robot-assisted arms that can rotate 360 degrees. Patients have minimal blood
loss, less scarring and the recovery process is faster. In this case we
performed a radical prostatectomy through robot-assisted arms and the diseased
gland was removed. The patient was discharged five days after the medical procedure
and has recovered fully.
Thanking Fortis Hospital
Mohali, the 61-year-old
patient Rajesh Kumar Kuchhal said that he approached several
hospitals but was not satisfied with their suggested line of treatment. He was
in severe pain and finally approached Fortis Hospital Mohali where he met Dr
Manish Ahuja. He studied his case thoroughly and explained that the right
treatment approach for him involved robotic surgery. He has now recovered and
is feeling energetic. He has no problem in walking and performing his daily
tasks. He recommends robotic surgery to anyone facing prostate complications.
